Sedores in Mongolia
Update:2009 September 12
10+ months in Mongolia
Acts 13:1-5 "In the church at Antioch, there were prophets and teachers: ... . The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cypress. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper."
So What does a New Ventures and Strategy Director Do?
For two months now, I (Jim) have served JCS as the new Ventures and Strategies Director. That title sounds pretty grand and it looks impressive on a business card. But just what do I do? Here is a brief list from last week.
Saturday: 8am Go with a Mongolian driver to pick up missionary recruiters at the airport. Take them to a bank and move them into a guest apartment.
- Purchase groceries and help clean our apartment.
Sunday: Walk to the recruiters' apartment and escort them to worship at our church. After worship, we take them to a shop to repair broken glasses and have lunch.
Monday: Meet for prayer every morning with JCS staff.
- Edit handouts written by a Malaysian and compiled by a Mongolian for missionary recruiters from India, Canada, Korea, Thailand and the US.
- Email the Amsterdam organizers of the Euro-Money Investment Conference to confirm my registration at the 8 Sep Mongolian forum.
- Meet with JCS leadership team to review project proposals and finalize recruiter training plan.
- Hang posters of JCS projects.
- Make a PowerPoint presentation of JCS strategy.
- Go to Mongolian language school for an hour.
Tuesday: 9-11 Present the JCS mission strategy to 9 missionary recruiters.
- 11-6 Attend Mongolian Investment forum with investors, bank CEOs, stock managers and mining executives in the Mongolian Parliament building. At lunch, sit with a 30 year old Mongolian geologist who wants to know more about the Bible.
- 6:30 Catch up with missionary recruiters at a restaurant and take 2 of them to our Bible Study home group at our apartment. Fourteen missionaries and recruiters attend.
Wednesday: Join the recruiters in visiting the Theological Education by Extension Office, the Union Bible and Theology Center, the Christian Soccer Club and Grace Hospice the only hospice in Mongolia.
- Buy the recruiters dust masks for their cross country road trip the next day.
Thursday: Write a summary of JCS opportunities to reach mining communities in Mongolia as huge mines are being developed.
- Email investors, geologists and finance staff that I met on Tuesday.
- The electricity goes out for 2 hours, so I meet with JCS Executive Director and discuss options for orienting new missionaries and supporting countryside missionary teams.
- Go to Mongolian language school for an hour.
- 7pm - Lead the first weekly Mongolian Men's Bible Study at the New Life Church. Three men join me and discuss what it means to be "worthy of our calling." Ephesians 4:1
Friday: Meet with Projects Director to discuss floor plans for the new office we hope to move into in April.
- Review the World Bank report on Reforestation in Mongolia. Write to the Mongolian coordinator to meet for lunch.
- Gather electrical adapters, mail, cash and DVDs to take the JCS missionary team in Bayankhongor (3 hour flight) when I join the recruiters to visit them on Monday.
- Go to Mongolian language school for an hour.
Liz goes to the Women's shelter every morning to train the women in jewelry making. They have sold much of what they had made and Liz is searching for local sources of Mongolian materials. Anyone know of a good source of yak-bone beads? Liz walks to language school at noon and we walk home together, getting back to the apartment around 6:30pm.
Prayer requests:
- Liz is recovering from a 10 day cold. However, the cough is
lingering. Please pray for her health.
- Liz's mother is losing weight and requiring more care. Liz's sister and her mother's caregiver are doing an excellent job, but Parkinson's continues to progress.
- Perseverance and refreshment. As we continue to help many people, we need to be continually renewed. Your prayers help us with that. Thanks to all of you who email us. It is great to hear from you.
Thank you for your prayers and support,
Jim & Liz Sedore
